Church of the Redeemer - Episcopal - 1886

This church is located on the corner of 6th & Washington.  Organized in 1840, the first church was replaced by the present building in 1888 at a cost of $30,899.  The beautiful brown stone edifice boats a slate roof, cupola, stained glass windows and gold gilt cross.

The church treasures its solid silver bell, reportedly cast from a thousand silver dollars and once the prized possession of the James Montgomery, a steamboat used to transport Civil War troops.  When the ship sank in 1861, Captain Halliday of Cairo secured the bell for the church.
