The Customs House - 1400 Washington Ave.

 



The Cairo's Custom House was under construction from 1867 until finished in 1872.  This building is on the National Register of Historical Places.  It features Romanesque and Renaissance architecture.  Alfred B. Muttlet, the supervising architect of the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. was the architect.  An act of Congress on August 3, 1854 made Cairo a Port of Delivery, therefore the placement of the building.  The building originally housed the U.S. Post Office, Government offices of various kinds and the U.S. District Court.  The building is owned by the City of Cairo and is under restoration to become a museum.
The Customs House is Open Mon. - Fri.  10-12 & 1-3
