|
The Cairo's Custom House was under construction from
1867 until finished in 1872. This building is on the National
Register of Historical Places. It features Romanesque and
Renaissance architecture. Alfred B. Muttlet, the supervising
architect of the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. was the
architect. An act of Congress on August 3, 1854 made Cairo a Port of
Delivery, therefore the placement of the building. The building
originally housed the U.S. Post Office, Government offices of various
kinds and the U.S. District Court. The building is owned by the City
of Cairo and is under restoration to become a museum.
